The Sound of Music: A Closer Look

The Sound of Music is a musical with a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the film tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain Georg von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with his family.

The original 1965 film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It was also nominated for three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. In addition to its critical acclaim, The Sound of Music was enormously popular, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

The Sound of Music: Maria

Maria is the first character we meet in The Sound of Music. She’s a postulant at the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, Austria, who is deemed “too wild” to become a nun. She’s given a chance to prove herself, however, when she’s sent to be the governess for the von Trapp family.

Maria is a free-spirited young woman who loves nature and animals. She’s also very creative, impulsive, and spontaneous. She has a strong sense of right and wrong, and she’s not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Maria is a romantic at heart, and she falls head-over-heels in love with Captain von Trapp.

The Sound of Music: Liesl

Liesl is the eldest daughter of the Von Trapp family, and she is sixteen going on seventeen. She is in that awkward stage where she doesn’t quite know how to express herself, but she does know that she wants more than just what her small town in Austria can offer her. She is creative and unique, and she sometimes feels like an outcast because of it. However, when Liesl meets Rolf, a boy from the village who is a little bit older than her, she finally feels understood. Through their secret correspondence (and a few stolen kisses), the two of them fall in love.

The original cast included Mary Martin as Maria and Theodore Bikel as Captain von Trapp. The show was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards.

Kurt is one of the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp and Maria von Trapp. He is portrayed by Michael Devine in the 1965 film adaptation and by Nicholas Hammond in the stage musical. Kurt is precocious and energetic, often causing mischief around the house much to Liesl’s dismay (though she does have a soft spot for him). He loves animals (especially Max) and hates taking baths.

The Sound of Music: Brigitta

Brigitta is the eldest of the seven von Trapp children. She is shy and studious, and often acts as a voice of reason for her siblings. Like her sister Liesl, Brigitta has a strong interest in romance and often daydreams about her future husband. She is a loyal and devoted daughter, who is always quick to comfort her father when he is feeling down.
